What School Trustees Do
School trustees are locally elected members of the Board of Education who provide leadership and oversight for the public education system. As a corporate board, trustees work together to set the district’s strategic direction, establish local policies, approve budgets and capital plans, and hire and oversee the Superintendent, who manages day‑to‑day operations. Their decisions must serve the best interests of all students across the district, not just those in their electoral area.
Trustees ensure transparent, accountable governance by engaging with families and community members, hearing student and family appeals, and representing the public’s educational priorities. They operate within the framework set by the Ministry of Education and the School Act, focusing on student achievement, well‑being, and long‑term planning rather than daily administrative tasks.
Serving as the vital link between the community and the public education system, trustees dedicate significant time to meetings, preparation, and community representation—helping shape a strong, responsive, and student‑centered school district.
