Charlie Lake Elementary School is a semi-rural K-6 school located 5 minutes from the bustling community of Fort St. John, which is located in the beautiful Peace River Valley. We enroll a population of 345 students, 10% of whom are First Nations students. The majority of our students are bussed, with a few walking. Our school has a staffing complement of 17 teachers, 8 support staff as well as principal, vice-principal, learning assistance teacher, Reading Recovery teachers, and part-time librarian. Our school enjoys itinerant access to a range of services such as deaf/hard of hearing support and counseling. Some themes that characterize our school are a commitment to child centered learning, and a focus on collaborative planning. We have an active Parent Advisory Council and a supportive parent community. This year our school will be focusing on developing the reading, writing and numeracy skills of our students and creating a safe and happy learning environment for all students and staff. Some exciting dimensions of our school are our involvement in the District’s Wireless Writing Project, with our students and staff having access to over 100 iBooks in the school and the involvement of teachers in a variety of ongoing staff and professional development, such as Performance Standards, Balanced Literacy and Blended Structure and Style in Writing.
