The following article was written by Cassie Westergaard and submitted to us by Mrs. Birley at NPSS. It is another excellent example of students who are best FOR the world!

The NPSS Senior Alternate program has successfully been working on projects to benefit both Fort St. John, and the international community.  Right now they are wrapping up a year long project to help the homeless in our community.

Throughout this past school year the program has completed projects such as sending Christmas shoeboxes, which are small boxes filled with gifts, to less fortunate children of Africa. The program also sponsored a family during Christmas and bought them Christmas dinner and gifts which hopefully helped the family have an amazing Christmas.

In addition, they have also cleaned up the school grounds and they have brought greeting cards to the seniors at Peace Villa Care Home to brighten their day.

Earlier this year, the class held a clothing and coin drive to provide warm clothing and supplies to the shelter. Walmart Canada also contributed a $1000 grant to this project.

Currently, Ronin Medcalfe, who is the lead organizer for the homeless project, is working on getting lockers for the homeless living in our community to use to keep their belongings safe.

“I think it makes them feel good, like somebody cares,” said Ronin Medcalfe. He’s been working on this project since last year when his proposal letter was read at City Council.

“They need somewhere to put their stuff where it won’t be stolen;  their wallets, ID’s, things that they treasure most,” said Medcalfe. Right now Ronin is working on the final stages of buying the lockers and getting them installed at the homeless shelter.

“Every homeless person in Fort St. John who uses the shelter will have access to the lockers,” said Medcalfe. The Salvation Army was more than happy to work with Ronin and the other students on this project.

“Receiving these donations means a lot to the community that we serve,” said Cameron Eggie, Executive Director for the Northern Centre of Hope. “It shows our guests that people do care about them and it shows our frontline staff that the community supports their work.”

While we have several staff members participating in the Movember fundraiser here is a story from Bert Bowes about one of our staff with a legendary moustache:

This November, a teacher with a legendary moustache shaved it off for cancer research.  Mr. Young shaved his bushy moustache off on November 1st for the first time in 25 years!  Mr. Young took on this challenge to help find a cure for prostate cancer and raise student awareness of this disease.  Our school has been raising money to support Mr. Young, but you can too!

For more info and how to donate see the school’s blog post at http://bowes.prn.bc.ca/?p=454

Here is another great example of our staff and students being Best for the World! Article below from teacher Julie Ludwinowski at Prespatou School:

Many of us have read and or participated in Bluey Day in order to help raise money for cancer research while supporting our local Fort St. John Hospital. Normally, people shave their head and collect donations to raise money.  However, this year, the Grade 6 Class at Prespatou School challenged their Principal – Dave Ritchie – to grow hair. Yes, that’s right…GROW hair!

In the efforts to challenge the class to “think outside the box” and further encourage empathy, their teacher – “Miss Julie” Ludwinowski – suggested the idea during one of the daily Fireside Chat times. Students thrived on the idea and took the challenge on calling it “Operation Fuzzball”; the name was selected because Mr. Ritchie had no hair to shave and they were excited to watch his hair grow. The Grade 6 students interviewed both the principal and his wife, created an information sheet and regularly collected donations from the community. The Grade 6 students raised over $700.00 for the cause and in turn will have an opportunity to shave their principal’s head at the end of the year ceremony this June.

In the photo, Grade 6 Students – Jessica Dick and Martin Bueckert – are measuring Mr. Ritchie’s hair growth to date.

Duncan Cran is participating in the Canadian Geographic Classroom Energy Diet Challenge.  The Challenge runs from February 6 – March 30, 2012.  In this contest classrooms are trying to complete 25 Energy Challenges.  The purpose of the Challenge is to think about Energy and how to reduce Energy use.  The goal of this challenge is to increase student awareness and understanding of energy use.  Secondly, to encourage students to think critically about energy and develop more energy-conscious decision making skills.  Thirdly, to help teachers meet learning objectives with curriculum-linked activities about energy.  Some examples of the challenges are:  Design a poster to convince people in school to reduce their energy use, to complete a garbage audit of the amount of garbage in the school, to build an anemometer to determine the best areas for wind in our school yard to determine what might be a good spot for a wind turbine, and to create an online pledge form and to get people to sign and commit to reducing energy.  Every class in our school has signed up to be a part of this challenge.  Duncan Cran is competing against 480 class rooms from across Canada.
If you would like to see more about what they have been doing towards the challenge visit:  www.canadiangeographic.ca/cedc
Tips to Reduce Your Energy Use:
Use reusable lunch bags and containers
Use a refillable water bottle rather than a disposable one.
Make sure to use both sides of a piece of paper.
Create a bin for paper that is still blank on one side.

Students and Staff at Baldonnel Elementary have put together 150 shoeboxes full of supplies and gifts for Operation Christmas Child. A very impressive contribution considering there are only 124 students at Baldonnel! The shoeboxes will be sent to less fortunate children overseas. Students studied citizenship and other countries and their economies this year as part of class projects which has made a deeper connection for them with Operation Christmas Child. This is a wonderful example of students that are best for the world!

CJDC TV has a news story from their November 23, 2011 broadcast starting at 5:48 available at this link http://bcove.me/6we560wa
