Teacher Laptops to be returned this year (to be swapped)

All teachers will be required to return their laptops this year. We need to consider how this is going to be done and I’ll provide some options, but would like you to comment on the post (remember it is public) if you have a preference or other suggestion…

Option 1

All Teachers will be required to hand in their WWP laptops at the end of June to their administrators. If a special circumstance exists please email jbell@prn.bc.ca (need it for a wedding slideshow etc) but arrangements must be made to hand it in during the summer. We will then transfer data, reimage and provide a new (possibly new to you) laptop to you at a later date arranged with the staff and yourself.

Option 2

All Teachers will be required to hand in their WWP laptops by appointment during the summer before August 15th at the facilities shop. We will then transfer data, reimage and provide a new (possibly new to you) laptop to you at a later date arranged with the staff and yourself.

Option 3

No I want to keep my old 4 year old laptop and I don’t want a brand new or one year old laptop! – No, not really an option, we want them all back

Option 4: Mix of Option 1 and 2

Leave your laptop with your AO June 30 or arrange with TS to drop it off on a certain day.

Option X?

Something else? Please give your thoughts in the comments to share.

Back up your Data

We also advise teachers to back up their data to the network or external drive. Personally purchased movies, pictures, music should be backed up by the teacher externally (ie. External Hard drive). NB: We won’t be held responsible for any purchases on your laptop or data that you haven’t backed up!

Who does this apply to?

Anyone with a WWP owned computer – that means AO’s, grade 6/7/8 teachers, teachers assigned a spare computer,  8-10 Teachers at Bert Bowes and Dr. Kearney as well are included in this.

Will I get a laptop back?

Grade 6/7 teachers will be provided with a new laptop

Grade 8 teachers will be provided with the one to two year old laptops if at all possible, (grade 9 teachers at BB and DK as well)

Grade 10 teachers moving to NPSS will not receive a laptop.

  1. Option 1 or 2 works for me – don’t care. One question – if we leave it at the end of June, is there a chance of getting it back during the summer or are we waiting until just before school starts up again?

  2. Option one or two works for me but at this time I have a brand new one and it was reimaged in Oct. Do you still want it? I usually use it for work(school related) over the summer for updating students files etc so would like it back as soon as possible to work through the mountain

    • Those of you teaching in grade 8 or 9 at DK or BB (and staying there next year) that did receive a new laptop when we did a shuffle last year will likely have to check in with your AO but won’t likely have to give it back for a long period of time if at all… We will probably want to reimage them for next years image though. We may be able to arrange techs onsite in DK and BB to do that on the last day or two of the year.

  3. Is there an option of this re-imaging being done over the month of June – laptops taken for one day and returned the next?

    • Only in the case where the staff member is using one of the 1 yr old WWP laptops, otherwise we are planning on replacing them… grade 6/7 teachers will be getting a new one and if they have a 1 yr old one they’ll be shuffled to the gr 8 (an 9 teachers at BB and DK)

  4. If I have a new computer already do I still need to hand it in? Would it be possible to have it done in June and returned the next day as someone else brought up?

    • If you are teaching in 6/7 we’d like to replace it with a brand new computer… we could do some scheduling where you’d bring it in, we’d transfer the files, and you walk out with your new one. We won’t get the new laptops until early July though

  5. Any of the options works for me. I am one of the teachers who received a new lap top last year (one of the 35 available). Does mine need to be handed in as well?

    • If you are in 6/7 then yes it needs to be swapped. If you are in 8/9 we might just do a reimage on it for you at the end of the year

  6. I have a computer that is only a year old and it was reimaged but I am switching schools next year, Bert Ambrose to Bert Bowes, still staying in the WWP program in grade 7. Can I have it just reimaged in June as I do a lot of my preplanning for next year during the summer?

    • we’d like to have the 6/7 on brand new ones so we’d like to swap it… we also need those 1 yr olds to swap with teachers in 8 (and 9 in middle schools)… we’re trying to find a process here with your suggestions to make it as small an interruption as possible for teachers (i.e. drop off on a day in July or June 30 and get a new one the next day or next week perhaps?)

  7. My preference is for Option 2 because I do use the computer during the summer for planning. I have one of the new computers at Dr. K but I will be teaching Gr. 7 and 9 next year. What happens?

  8. I do like the option of dropping it off at the end of June and picking up the new one, the next day or even the next week, that would work for me.

  9. When we get them back will depend on when we get the new ones in. We’ll see what we can do around budget rules on purchasing and when they can arrive so that they get billed starting next year… Hopefully whatever we do it can be early in July

  10. I like option 2. I like being able to use the laptop over the summer and honestly have become quite addicted to it. Please don’t take my laptop for any longer than necessary!!!!

  11. Option 2 looks great! If possible a quick turn around would be helpful. I find it very useful in the summer. The sooner the better so we have time to explore updates or new programs. Maybe, let me know when you need it, I could bring it in and I could pick it up to help out.

  12. Since mine was one of the new ones last year, and I am staying at Ambrose, I would like to be able to drop it off near the end of June, and be able to pick up my new one a couple of days later, if we can schedule that. I can save files to the server, but will the files etc on my desktop be set up the same on my new one?

    • Wwp 6/7 teachers will get a new laptop. 1yr olds will go to our grade eight teachers and nines at the middles.

We will set up a schedule for a swap as well. Always backup your data as you mentioned but we will transfer everything in your user folder which includes your desktop files.
