We had 4 schools share examples of explicit instructional strategies for teaching the expectations in their behaviour matrix.

This year, 11 individuals from School District 60 attended the Making Connections Conference in Richmond, BC. The themes that were threaded throughout the conference this year were self-regulation, supporting students with developmental and neurodevelopmental disorders within PBS, and sustainability of PBS.

A few highlights:

Dr. Kent McIntosh’s (University of Oregon) plenary session, Lessons Learned in Sustaining PBS. He talked about the 4 Principles of Sustaining PBS and highlighted recent local research on these principles. As a part of a District team planning to strengthen and grow systemic school wide PBS practice, this session was very relevant and timely. The other impressive feat that Kent was able to do in this session was to present research in such an interactive and lively manner that it successfully counteracted the after-lunch effect.

Dr. Pat Mirenda’s (UBC) keynote presentation, Making Connections: Where have we been and where do we need to go? Dr. Mirenda highlighted 6 critical steps that are needed to move PBS forward in British Columbia:

Education of all stakeholders about the relationship between School-wide Positive Behaviour Support (PBS) and Response to Intervention (RTI). RTI and PBS are the FOUNDATION for creating schools that are safe and welcoming for all students. This foundation can SUPPORT other initiatives.

Long-term provincial commitment to PBS and RTI.

Collaborative advocacy efforts to secure targeted, continuous funding of a dedicated provincial team of PBS trainers and coaches. There also needs to be targeted funding at the district level to support and sustain PBS.

Additional supports aimed at systematic data collection and how to use data for continuous improvement of Tier I and Tier II interventions.

Additional training for school and district teams to deliver Tier III supports.

Focus on building and sustaining PBS at secondary schools.

Another session we found very useful was the Efficient Data Collection System facilitated by Diane Goodman (Elem. Principal) & Rose Tull (District Behviour Teacher) from Nanaimo School District. It was very inspiring to see a school team forge ahead on their own to develop an electronic data collection system and attain multi-year success with it.

We really appreciated the opportunity to attend sessions with Bert Bowes Middle School and Clearview School teams along with staff members from the Learning Services team. It was truly positive experience to learn with these teams and start to solidify a common PBS knowledge in S.D. 60.

Welcome to the 2012-2013 school year!

A few updates to get the year started and support your PBS efforts in your schools:

First, I would like to introduce myself to everyone. My name is Carmen Gietz and I have joined Tim Ylagan as a District SR/PBS coach this year. This is my second year in the district, and I am excited to be taking on this role and working with schools to promote and implement PBS. Throughout my training as a School Psychologist, I had the pleasure of working with Dr. Kent McIntosh at UBC to conduct research on various aspects of PBS. In our research lab, we looked at issues such as the link between behaviour supports in school and academic achievement, integrating bullying prevention into PBS, and factors influencing sustainability of PBS. I completed my District PBS Coaches Training during the 2010-2011 school year. My contact information can be found on the Contact Information page on the right of your screen. I am excited to share my passion for PBS and I look forward to working with you all this year!

Please mark your calendars for our first District SR/PBS Rep. meeting, taking place on Monday, October 15th, 2012. The meeting will be 3:30pm-4:30pm in the District Development Centre (DDC) at the BO/SSS building. We will e-mail the agenda out to school SR/PBS reps at a later date.

For those of you interested in a professional development opportunity, consider the Making Connections Conference! The 15th Annual Making Connections Conference is taking place on October 31st-November 2nd, 2012, in Richmond, BC. There is an exciting lineup of speakers and presenters, with sessions focused on school-wide, class-wide, small group, and individual supports. Please see the attached program for more information.

2011-12 PBS Support at S.D. 60

This year’s teacher job action impacted both the ability of our PBS/SR network team and school-based PBS teams to meet and collect established data. However, we can still celebrate successes experienced across the district with new and ongoing PBS initiatives. To help streamline school wide PBS implementation criteria for our schools, we have identified 6 key features and have documented examples of each. Please click on the YouTube video above.

We are very proud of our Social Responsibility at Bert Ambrose Elementary!

We will soon be entering into our 5th year of our Virtue’s Program at our school. We focus every year on being Respectful. Responsible and Resourceful. We even have a song written by Paul Hann a professional songwriter, which our whole school sings on a regular basis.

In our Social Responsibility Plan we have a team leader, our grade five teacher, Mr. Filmer who works with the staff. Each classroom teacher chooses one of the three themes and reports out once a year at a Virtue’s Assembly. We have three Virtue’s Assemblies, one each term, and the four classroom teachers work together. They prepare skits and songs, to share with the entire school at these wonderful assemblies.

Also in our School Improvement Plan we have been tracking Social Responsibility for the entire school population. (Solving Problems in Peaceful Ways). We have been doing this for over five years and teachers provide this information at each reporting period. The results demonstrate that we know our students who need support. The percentage of students who are Minimally Meeting to Exceeding Expectation this rubric of Solving Problems in Peaceful Ways has been sustained at 96% over the last five years.

We are very proud of Bert Ambrose Elementary.
